Tiwatope Savage, known professionally as Tiwa Savage,is a Nigerian singer, song writer, and actress.

PERSONAL LIFE

Tiwa was born in Isale Eko Lagos Nigeria, on 5 February 1980.she relocated to London in 1991 at age 11 for her secondary education. Five years later, she began her music career doing backup vocals for artist such as’george Michael’ and Mary J.blige. Tiwa Savage graduated with a degree in accounting from the University of Kent,and started working at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Tiwa Savage was married to Tunji”Tee billz” balogun. On 23 November 2013, the couple held their traditional marriage at the Ark lekki.
The couple had an amazing White wedding at the stupendous Armani Hotel in Dubai on 1 January 2015. Tiwa Savage gave birth to her son Jamil, six months after announcing the expectation of her first child.

MUSIC

The queen of African music as she fondly calls herself, has Four albums and Eps to her name. These includes…. Her debut album, “ONCE UPON A TIME”(2013), R.E.D(2015), “SUGAR CANE”(2017), and “CELIA”(2020).
In July 2019, Savage was featured on “keys to the kingdom”, a track she co-wrote for Beyoncé’s soundtrack album “The Lion King”.
On 5 September 2019, Savage released”49–99″, her first single with MOTOWN records. The song references the line “49 sitting, 99 standing” from Fela kuti’s 1978 hit “suffering and smiling”. Described as a blend of Afrobeats, R&B and Pop music, “49-99” features syncopated percussion, humming background harmonies and crisp snares. The Meji Alabi- directed video, features colourful imagery and symbolism, posing a flashback memory. One of the scenes in the video references the iconic portraits of Congolese schoolgirls taken in 1972 by veteran photographer Elliot Elisofon. Another scene, in which Tiwa is laid out with lengthy braids, is a reminiscent of Diana Ross’s accented flower look from the late 1960s.

MOVIES

Tiwa Savage was casted as a supporting cast in 2014 “SHUGA” season 3. She played the role of “Sade Banjo”.
She was also casted as a cameo in 2016 for Jennifer’s diary season 3.

AWARDS

In November 2018, Savage won’Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe music Awards, becoming the first woman to win the category. Other of her awards includes,
“The HEADIES award for best collaboration (2018)”, MTV Africa music Award for best female (2014), Nigeria Entertainment Award for Female artist of the year (2014), City people music Award for music Artist of the year (female) (2014(,2017) , and a host of others….
The 40 year old music Superstar has been linked with the just concluded#EndSARS campaign. As she joined other celebrities to protest for a better Nigeria.
She said “I was involved, recently in a project that I was so proud of, like as an artist I was so so proud to be called to be among the few people that was involved in the project. It’s called ‘Black is King’: The Gift album”
She went on to say “I’m calling on Beyonce and her team, the same way they used their platform….. to elevate and to show the world that BLACK IS KING and how beautiful Afrobeats and Africa our culture is. I want them to please use their voice and their platform right because the same country that birth this genre (Afrobeat)is on fire right now”.
The Queen of African music has strongly been involved in many youth empowerment and breast cancer screening projects across Nigeria. She’s indeed an outstanding figure in the Nigerian music world, and the country at large. A model worth emulating, and undoubtedly the most outstanding female in the industry.
