Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna boy. is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper, and dancer.
He was born on 2 July 1991. He rose to prominence after releasing his 2012 song, “LIKE TO PARTY,” the lead single from his debut studio album.
Personal life:
Burna boy was born in Port Harcourt Nigeria. His father managed a welding company, and his mother worked as a translator. His grandfather, “Benson Idonije” once managed the legendary “Fela Anikulapo kuti”.
The African giant grew up in southern Nigeria where he began making his own beats using “FruityLoops. He attended Corona secondary school Agbara, before moving to London to study Media Technology at the University of Sussex, followed by Media communication and culture at the prestigious Oxford Brookes University.
Music and Artistry:
Burna boy recorded “my money, my baby”, a track that appeared on the award winning “Queen and Slim’s” soundtrack album. Described as an “Afrobeat–tinged track,” My money, my body” contains a sample of Fela kuti’s 1972 “Shakara”. Burna boy describes his music as Afro-fusion, a genre that blends Afrobeats, dancehall rythms, reggae, American rap and R&B. August brown of the Los Angeles Times said Burna boy’s sound is “savvy and modern but undistracted by obvious crossover moves.
International collaborations:
The Afrobeats Superstar has been involved in a couple of international collaborations, with Sam Smith, Dave, stormzy and Ed Sheeran, pop smoke etc….
Albums:
The musical artist also has five amazing albums to his name, including the recent “Twice as Tall”, which he dropped on 14 August 2020. Burna boy also received a Grammy award nomination for ‘best Rock Album’2019.
The music superstar lent his voice on the recently concluded #EndSARS #Endpolicebrutality campaign, as he sponsored the mounting of billboards to ENDSARS all over Nigeria. He took to his Twitter account and said, “My #EndSARS billboards have gone up all over Nigeria.
The African Giant, ,recently released a new song about the slain Nigerian protesters, “20:10:20”. The track was inspired by the recent lekki massacre where security forces allegedly shot peaceful protesters demonstrating against police brutality.
In a statement, Burna boy said, “The proceeds of this song will be used to support families of victims and people suffering affliction as a result of the lekki shooting. He said ” May the heavens open and celebrate all our fallen heroes who have died for this movement from the very beginning. Rest in peace to all the beautiful lives lost.
Controversies:
Burna boy’s outspokenness have made him a controversial figure in Nigeria and African entertainment. Burna boy has been in a feud with South African rapper “AKA” over tweets he made against Nigeria that carried xenophobic undertones.in 2019,the rapper tweeted in an angry haze after south Africa lost to Nigeria at the 2019 Africa’s cup of nations in Egypt.
Oluwa Burna who claimed to have been away through all the tweets storm that followed AKA, tweeted, “and @AKAworldwide I know you was retarded but I didn’t know it had gotten this bad. Next time I see you, you better have a big security bro, on Gambos grave ur gonna need it. He further threatened, And @MI_Abaga it’s fk @Akaworldwide from now on. And if you down with him, it’s fk you too. I respect you too much please don’t throw my respect out the window cuz I swear you will fly out with it.
