Most people grow plants because they like the look of them, or are attracted to their foliage or the flowers that they produce. Some people grow plants for food.
Those who are interested in feng shui will consider growing plants because they are classified as good luck plants.
These plants will not only freshen the look of your home but bring some much need good fortune into your living space.
When I think of good luck plants, shamrocks and four-leaf clovers come to mind. They have a common connection to good luck for many. However, these are not the only lucky plants to keep in your home.
Lucky plants to grow indoors
Are you looking for some new plants to add to your home, or office this year? Perhaps it’s time to consider some of those that attract good fortune.
It matters not whether you are a seasoned gardener or someone just learning about the hobby of gardening, it’s time to learn more about other lucky plants that are thought to bring good vibes, positive energy, and good luck into your home.
If you live in the warmer hardiness zones, these plants can be grown year-round in your yard. For the colder zones, you can enjoy their good luck qualities by growing them as indoor plants.
Let’s dig in to discover some lucky plants to enjoy this year.
Lucky bamboo – one of the best known lucky plants
The lucky bamboo plant has the botanical name dracaena sanderiana. They are a genus of easy to grow indoor plants that will add a zen-looking touch to any indoor setting.
Other names for the plant are good luck bamboo, lucky bamboo dracaena, and dracaena bamboo.

Lucky bamboo is also thought to represent the five elements of feng shui. It is a symbol of fortune and prosperity.
Lucky bamboo likes indirect light and a temperature range of 65–95°F (18–35°C). It will winter outdoors in hardiness zones of 10–11. in colder zones, grow it as a house plant.
Dwarf umbrella trees
Schefflera arboricola capella is a variegated variety of umbrella plants.
In China, the umbrella tree is one of the most commonly used plants in Feng Shui.
The fingers of the leaves are thought to capture positive energy and the plant is said to bring wealth to the residents.
The way in which the fingers droop slightly from the stem looks like an umbrella, which leads to the plant’s common name.
Peace lily
Spathiphyllum wallisii – also known as a peace lily. According to feng shui, growing peace lilies means that good luck and good fortune are on the horizon for you.
This plant has long strappy green leaves and brilliant white flowers. It will create a pleasant atmosphere in any room. Many people also think that peace lilies are useful for purifying the air of environmental contaminants.
Place peace lilies anywhere that you would like to improve air quality. They are especially useful as office plants.
Peace lilies have lily-like white flowers and are associated with prosperity, peace, and sympathy. The plants are easily damaged by frost.
Grow spathiphyllum wallisii outdoors in zones 11 and 12. In colder regions, bring them indoors before the temperatures reach 40° F.
Parlor palms
This attractive plant with feathery fronds has the botanical name chamaedorea elegans. Common names for the plant are parlor palm, dwarf palm, fishtail palm, and good luck palm.
Parlor palms have a place in feng shui as a plant to improve balance and purify the air.
The plants are also versatile. They are as happy by your front door as they are in a corner of your room.
Outdoors, parlor palms are hardy in zones 10 to 12. They make a great shade plant. Indoors, the graceful plant looks lovely in the corner of a well-lit room.
Rubber plant
The rubber plant – ficus elastica – is a popular ornamental indoor plant.
Outdoors, it will grow to over 100 feet tall, but the indoor variety can be kept at a moderate size by keeping it slightly pot bound and with careful pruning. Indirect light is best for plants grown inside.
Rubber plants are considered “wealth plants.” They are thought to attract abundance, good fortune, and wealth. The round leaves are said to symbolize money and prosperity in feng shui.
If you live in zones 10 and 11, you can grow rubber plants outdoors. Zone 9 plants may grow outdoors if they are well mulched for winter. For those in other hardiness zones, ficus elastica is grown as an indoor plant.
Mother-in-laws tongue
Sanseviera is also known as snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue.
The plant grows 2 to 4 feet tall and has long green and yellow striped leaves. It seems to thrive on minimal care but is prone to damage from overwatering.
The snake plant is deemed to bring good luck. It absorbs contaminants from the air and eliminates toxins. The plant is thought to give off strong protective energy and shield the home from negative chi energy.
Sanseviera grows outdoors in zones 9b through 12. Potted plants grown outdoors can take a slightly colder climate. Indoors, the plants can take a lower light condition.
Orchids – one of the most beautiful lucky plants
Phalaenopsis orchids are also known as ice cube orchids. They need just three ice cubes a week for watering! These orchids need humid and warm conditions. They don’t like to be overwatered.
Put your orchid in a shady spot with bright light for best results. They will flower for months and, with a bit of luck, will also re-flower.
The orchid was a popular plant in ancient Japan and was considered a symbol of wealth by the royalty. Plants were kept in temples and often painted on scrolls. The orchid is believed to bring good luck and prosperity to your home.
Orchids are also thought to bring love and good fortune to you. It is believed that they help you find a good life partner.
In feng shui, orchids symbolize good relationships, happiness, and better fertility.
Phalaenopsis orchids are hardy only in zones 10 to 12 outdoors. In other zones, grow them as indoor plants.
Arrowhead plant
Commonly known as the arrowhead plant, or goosefoot, syngonium podophyllum is a feng shui plant. This plant has a distinctive leaf, which changes from the typical arrow-shaped form to one with five lobes as it matures.
The five lobes represent the five elements: water, fire, earth, wood, and metal. This gives it the perfect balance of Yin Yang. The plant is also thought to cleanse the air, as so many lucky plants do.
Place an arrowhead plant on a desk to bring thoughts of new ideas and to provide inspiration.
Arrowhead plant is winter hardy in zones 10 to 12. Elsewhere, it is grown as an indoor plant. The plant prefers bright indirect light.
Shamrock plant – one of the most popular lucky plants
While not an actual member of the shamrock family, oxalis or false shamrock does have the traditional shamrock-shaped leaves.
All shamrock-shaped plants are considered lucky in feng shui. Shamrocks are associated with Ireland. In Irish folklore, the number three is considered very lucky so plants with three leaves are thought to be lucky plants.
A common exception that has three leaves is poison ivy!! In this case, it is “leaves of three, let them be!”
The three leaves of the shamrock are meant to stand for faith, hope, and love. St. Patrick thought the plant symbolized the Holy Trinity. If your plant has a fourth leaf it is considered lucky.
The four-leaf clover is an uncommon variation of the regular plant and is widely considered to be lucky.
Oxalis is one of the lucky plants that will grow outdoors in some cooler locations. It is cold and hardy in zones 6 and above. I grow oxalis plants indoors around the time of St. Patrick’s day but also have many growing outdoors in semi-shady locations in my garden.
Peepal bonsai
The botanical name for this plant is ficus religiosa. It is considered a sacred tree in Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism. Grown as a bonsai plant, it is thought to bring good luck and positivity to the home.
Ficus religiosa is also known as the Bodhi Tree. Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment under this tree.
The plant likes moist, well-draining soil and full sun.
Peepal bonsai is only winter hardy in USDA zones 10-12. Other zones can enjoy ficus religiosa as a houseplant.
